From the “Cast Iron Cooking” Facebook page Brad Woods responded as to why there are pits on the bottom of old iron. He said “sulfur in the gas makes sulfuric acid when it burns causing it to eat away at the iron.”  August 4, 2013.

What is a scotch bowl?

Scotch bowls were made to be hung over a fire in order to cook broth or porridge. Both are dishes that need to be stirred constantly which is why they have rounded bottoms and no lids.
